“How can I assist you?” Reasonable Modification to Policy Considerations

The National Aging and Disability Transportation Center (NADTC) office hours are focused on enhancing training and technical assistance opportunities and offer further opportunities to interact with your peers, topic experts and NADTC staff.

In recognition of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) Anniversary, this session will provide an overview of the reasonable modification rule of U.S. DOT. This rule helps clarify and guide providers to ensure that people with disabilities have opportunities to use accessible transportation and to be connected to their communities. As a transportation provider that operates fixed-route or demand response service, or any combination, accessible services must be provided that meets ADA requirements and without discrimination. A crucial element for providing quality accessible transportation is to have a clear and formalized process in place for handling reasonable modification requests by customers. This includes considerations for an interactive request process, thinking about providing requested passenger assistance, and the importance of a clearly written agency policy that promotes practices which help customers make trips from origin to destination.
