In Summer 2019, NADTC hosted the Accessible Pedestrian Pathways mini-course. The course focused on pedestrian accessibility, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements related to accessible pathways, technology applications, the walkability movement in the United States, conducting walkability assessments at the community level, and examples of local projects. The course ran from August 6 – September 14 and consisted of weekly webinars or presentations, quizzes, and a final project. For the final project assignment, course participants were asked to complete one of the following: developing a policy statement, identifying a pedestrian improvement project, establishing a pedestrian advisory committee, or planning a community walking assessment. The course outline follows:
Week of August 5: Pedestrian ADA Accessibility Overview
Week of August 12: Walkability and Complete Streets Movement Assignment: Each participant completes a walkability/wayfinding assessment using Easterseals Neighborhood Wayfinding Assessment checklist.
Week of August 19: Technology and Its Role in Pedestrian Infrastructure
Week of August 26: Pedestrian Accessibility National Initiatives
Week of September 3: Local Projects and Promising Practices
Week of September 9: Final Project Assignment on your choice of developing a policy statement; identifying a pedestrian improvement project; establishing a pedestrian advisory committee; or planning a community walking assessment.
September 14 – Final Assignment due
